Course topics

Parametric Design

It is possible to find many resources and video about parametric design in internet. To have a first look one can visit the website of the parametric software used for the lectures, Grasshopper and read The Grasshopper Primer.


Daylight simulations and Daylight Factor calculation

The exercise about Daylight Factor calculation in the parametric design environemnt is presented in the following link to a page of this blog.





Daylight Factor test
The test will consist in finding the configuration of window size and shading device size having to respect one assigned parameters (e.g. window height) to obtain an assigned value of Daylight Factor.

Course software
Rhinoceros/Grashsopper (Parametric design)
DIVA (daylight design)

Operating system
For the course it is possible to use only Windows and not Mac laptops. The parametric software runs on both Windows and Mac OS operating systems, but the daylight simulation software runs only on Windows computers.

To download and install all the necessary software and components follow the following steps:

1 – Rhinoceros. 3D modeling software (website https://www.rhino3d.com/). Download an evaluation version of Rhino 6 from the webpage https://www.rhino3d.com/download. Rhino 6 is only 64bit, if your computer has a 32bit operating system then you have to use Rhino 5 (available for download on the same web page). Together with the installation of Rhino 6 the parametric/generative design software Grasshopper is installed. If you installed a version of Rhino 5 then you need to download and install Grasshopper separately from the following link https://www.grasshopper3d.com/page/download-1.

2 - DIVA. Daylight design software for Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. Go to the webpage https://www.solemma.com/Diva.html click on Download Free trial, fill the required information and chose the version 64bit (DIVA-for-Rhino 4.1.0.12-x64) if you have installed Rhino 6 (because you have a Windows operating system at 64 bit) or chose the version 32bit (
DIVA-for-Rhino 4.0.2.24-x86) if you have installed Rhino 5 at 32bit (because you have a Windows operating system at 32bit). Install DIVA accepting all the required options and fields. After having finished the installation the tab of DIVA will be available in Grasshopper. 
N.B. The software Rhinoceros works for 90 days and DIVA works for 30 days.
